The first wheelchairs will smash together in Sparekassen Fyn Arena on Monday afternoon, but the opening day of the IWRF World Championship will also feature plenty of entertainment, Danish celebrities and a royal visit.

Denmark face Belgium in the first game of the World Championships at 4.30 PM local time on Monday, but the doors to the venue will open two hours earlier with an entertaining opening ceremony on the menu. A show game between Danish celebrities and local players, a parkour demonstration and musical entertainment add spice to the traditional oaths and anthems. In the stands, Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark will look on, as will representatives from seven embassies of the countries participating in the championship.

- We are going to start the tournament with a blast. The opening day sets the tone for the entire week, and we will try to make it an unforgettable experience for both audiences and players, says Mette Holstein Arnesen, Event Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee.

Celebrities in rugby wheelchairs

At 3 PM on Monday, local players from the wheelchair rugby club Valhalla Warriors will take on a team of celebrities with a special connection to Odense and Funen. Among others, the celebrity team counts the likes of the Danish Minister of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs Carsten Hansen, flamboyant fashion icon Jim Lyngvild, singer Julie Berthelsen and Mayor of Nyborg Kenneth Muhs.

- It’s going to be really fun and probably very silly. I can’t wait! For me it’s a huge honor to be a part of the World Championship and to support athletes with disabilities. Meeting the Danish players and watching the opening match will be a great and memorable experience, says Jim Lyngvild.

Denmark favorites against Belgium

After the opening ceremony, Denmark and Belgium will bust open the action. Both teams will be wanting to get off to a good start, but Danish player/coach Thor Johansson believes his guys have the upper hand.

- Our preparations have been good, and the team is ready for the first game. Belgium is a good, solid team with lots of experience, and it will not be an easy one for us. If we play up to our best, however, we should be able to beat Belgium and make it far in this tournament, says Thor Johansson.

Tickets for the opening ceremony and match can be purchased in the entrance to Sparekassen Fyn Arena on Monday, and can be reserved on the World Championship website 2014wrwc.dhif.dk under ’Tickets’.

Danish Kanal Sport will live stream the ceremony and opening games, and the Denmark-Belgium matchup will be broadcast on Danish television. Watch the games online at 2014wrwc.dhif.dk under ’Webcast’.
